Tash-Rabat means “stone shelter”. Built from local rock, it has a central domed hall and more than thirty small rooms where merchants, pilgrims and their animals once waited out storms on the way to Kashgar.

Today a few yurt camps stand nearby, and the valley behind the building is good for walks and horse rides.
